FAUNA
The Reserve of the Isonzo river’s mouth gives visitors the chance to observe a wide range of very interesting animal species that are not so common elsewhere. After the institution of the natural protected area an increasing of biodiversity occurred. Consequently, it resulted in remarkable effects in favour of the avifauna which is constantly monitored. More than 300 species of birds have been observed since today. Some of them are migrators and choose the Reserve to stop and to find food during their journey there or back. Other birds choose the protected area to spend the Winter or to spend the long Summer. There is a great number of species of geese and ducks in addition to the Common Sandpiper, the Heron, the Curlew and numerous birds of prey.
As far as mammals are concerned, a fairly high number of species has been observed, due to the quiet atmosphere and to the proximity to the Karst. Besides many species of rodents, chiropteras and insectivoras the Reserve hosts a remarkable quantity of mammals like the Roe, the Fox, the Badger, the Wild Boar and the Hare just to name a few.
It goes without saying that there is a high number of amphibians such as different species of frogs, of European Tree Frogs, of Bufos and of Newts as this type of environment relay suits them. In addition, it is possible to observe a large amount of reptiles such as the European Pond Turale, the Grass Snake and the European Green Lizard.
Many interesting species of invertebrates live in the river, in the ponds and in the swampy areas. Some of them are remarkable and brightly coloured types of butterflies, like the rare Polyxena, the Red Admiral (Vanessa Atalanta) just to name a few.
