BIODIVERSITY PROTECTION AND CONSERVATION
This is the main goal of the protected area according to the first “Ambito di tutela” (1976 – 78: Regional city planning).
The biodiversity of an area is represented by the number of habitats and species of animals and vegetables that live there. In the Reserve this number is extraordinarily high despite its fairly small dimensions (2400 hectares). Since nowadays a great number of species of birds have been observed, about 313 out of the 550 counted in Europe. The Isonzo river’s mouth was acknowledged as site of communitarian importance and site of special safeguard. About 200 hectares of farming land have undergone a renaturisation process and a “centre for wild fauna reclamation” was created a few years ago.
