A SHORT PRESENTATION OF THE RESERVE

From the Northernmost side of the Adriatic sea, where the Timavo river flows, arises a shallow water shore characterised by a complex lagoon structure that includes Venice and finishes with the delta of the Po river. The Isonzo river rises near the Timavo river’s mouth in the Giulie Alps in Slovenia and flows into the gulf of Triest  between Monfalcone and Grado. The regional Nature Reserve of the Isonzo river’s Mouth is a 2400 hectares area which stretches along the last 15 Km of the Isonzo’s course. Its territory is included in the municipalities of Staranzano, San Canzian d’Isonzo, Grado and Fiumicello.
This area has undergone remarkable transformations in the centuries. On the one hand, such changes are due to the erosion and deposit action of the river and of the sea, on the other hand they are the result of canalisation and reclamation works.
Until a few decades ago the area was dedicated to farming and grazing while the sea side land was kept fairly untouched from a naturalistic point of view. Since the 90s some works have been carried out and they have led to the creation of a temporary fresh water marsh, called “Il Ripristino” (the Reclamation). The new background has considerably increased the number of species living in wet environments.
Nowadays, mankind and wild fauna coexist in the Reserve. In the area different habitats were recreated and they benefit the presence of many species of animals and vegetables.  Besides, some observatory facilities were harmoniously built after specific planning in order to be both eco friendly and with easy direct access for users who are wiling to discover nature and enjoy very interesting and rich natural environments.
