GENERAL INFORMATION ON THE RESERVE

Isola della Cona, Cona Island/Isle, is the heart of the Regional Nature Reserve of the Isonzo river’s Mouth, a 2400 hectares area which is situated along the last 15 Km of the Isonzo’s course. The river rises in the Giulie Alps in Slovenia and flows into the gulf of Triest  between Monfalcone and Grado after approximately 140 Km of course. The high biological value of the area depends upon its geographical setting as it is the northernmost wet area of the Mediterranean Sea. Its land physically marks the distinction between the mountainous rocky shore of the Karst in the provinces of Triest and Gorizia on the one side, and the low sandy shore of the Po Valley and Veneto region with the wide beaches of Grado and Marano on the other. Isola della Cona is a piece in the jigsaw of the complex  structure of the lagoon that includes Venice and finishes with the delta of the Po river.
The territory of the Reserve stretches over the municipalities of Staranzano, San Canzian d’Isonzo, Grado and Fiumicello . Together, they are in charge of the general management, while since February 2003 the Consortium of social Cooperatives “Il Mosaico” has been entrusted with the operational management.

Opening hours
The ticket office is open from Monday to Sunday (closed on Thursday)(9:00 am – 5:00 pm). In Spring and in Summer the office closes later in the evening.

RECOMMENDED EQUIPMENT FOR VISITING THE RESERVE

• Seasonal clothes and particularly, waterproof shoes (with rainy weather natural paths can get muddy), cap for sun protection , fly repellent in Spring and Summer
• Binoculars and camera  
• Rubbish bag (we are all responsible for the rubbish we produce)
